In our subconscious we have stored every experience we have ever experienced. When there are traumatic, or experiences that are not understandable or can’t be processed rationally, then it gets stored in the subconscious. Our subconscious then becomes a filter of all of our experiences through which everything that we do and understand today goes through that filter automatically. That is how we interpret everything we understand today. We throw out some things, pull in other things all based on our filters – past experiences. A lot of these experiences happen very young, or trauma, they tend to come up in nightmares or dreams that are reflective of something but we don’t usually understand it. They are often in metaphors. We don’t dream logical concepts, we dream in metaphors, pictures, sounds, sensations, and actions. The dream happens when we’re asleep and the part of our brain that separates the conscience from the subconscious is relaxed and it allows those things that are bubbling to the surface to enter into the semiconscious in the dream. We are sort of aware of it but we’re not really thinking about it. Then if we can remember the dreams, that is a way for the conscious mind to begin to process things that are stored away and suppressed in the subconscious. So we can actually use dreams as a means to help identify what’s bothering us and getting in the way of living out our life in a productive way. Or a dream could even be hopes that we have. So it’s not only negative things – it is just stuff that we haven’t processed. And so it comes up into our semiconscious similar to the bubbles in a bottle of champaign. You pop the lid and all the little bubbles start to come to the surface. Those little bubbles are a gas – CO2 that’s under pressure – they were there before you popped the lid – they were just not in bubble form - rather in solution form in the liquid; but when the pressure is released because the person is asleep and the part that suppresses those concepts has been released it allows those thoughts – those bubbles to come to the surface.
